Dear Friends

In our church services this morning, I missed many familiar faces – some away travelling, others unwell. For those travelling, may our good Lord grant you His protection and refreshment. For those unwell, may you receive His mighty and healing touch today.

It was, however, lovely to welcome several visitors, many of them travellers passing through Blenheim. One visitor at our 9am service bought one of the last two copies of Rev Robin Kingston’s Healing of Memories – which means there’s just one copy left! If you’d like to purchase it (for $10), please email me at deo@stchristophers.co.nz and I’ll reserve it for you.

As Term 4 begins this week, let us remember to pray for the children returning to school and for their teachers as they guide and inspire them.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS IN OUR CHURCH LIFE

The Diocesan Synod (Nelson, September 18–20)

Mary Griffiths, Alan and Valerie Nicholson and I attended as your representatives. It was a blessed gathering of clergy and lay leaders from across the diocese – a time of worship, prayer and reflection on God’s work among us.

Healing Service (September 20)

Jointly organised with the Order of St Luke, this was a deeply moving afternoon of prayer and healing. You can read my report on our website: God at Work: Healing Service at St Christopher’s

Sunday, September 21 – Message by Rev Robin Kingston

Robin’s message, “How Do You Recognise God In Action In Your Life?” centred on Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…” He reminded us that “all things” include not only blessings but also hardships. His challenge was to recognise and trust God’s providence in every season of life – even in struggle – believing that He is always at work for our good.

Messy Church (September 21, Parish Hall)

Our Spring Messy Church was a success – attended by over 60 parents and children! Praise the Lord, and thank you to the whole Messy Church Team for your faithful service.

Funeral for Shona Iuli (September 22)

Our church was filled with family, friends and colleagues honouring Shona’s life and faith. A dedicated Sunday school teacher and Rest Home worker, Shona was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. We thank the Lord for her life and continue to uphold her family in prayer.

Corporate Prayer Gathering (September 27)

Our theme, “Seeking God’s Blessing on the Economy, Work and Life of our City and Nation,” was very timely given the current economic challenges. Thank you to everyone who attended. The prayer guide from that meeting is attached – you may find it useful for your personal or group prayers.

Bishop Steve’s Synod Charge

On September 28 we watched a video recording of Bishop Steve’s charge to Synod. In his message “Hearts that Burn” (Luke 24:32), he called us to live with hearts ablaze for Jesus – full of passion for His word and His mission. During the reflection time, one member shared honestly that “burning hearts” can feel a bit daunting. That’s true for many of us. But as we surrender our fears to God, He replaces them with courage, boldness and peace.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about this theme. Do you long for a heart that burns for Jesus? What holds you back? Please feel free to email me your reflections. I’ll keep them confidential and only share anything publicly with your permission.

RECENT LOSSES AND OUR PRAYER

We grieve with those who have lost loved ones in recent weeks.

  • Beth Funnell - A longtime member and key figure behind our church’s Goodwill ministry. Her funeral service will be held Wednesday October 8th at 1pm in our church. Please keep her family in prayer, especially following the recent loss of her daughter, Shona Iuli.

  • Denise Winstanley - A faithful former member who recently passed away in Wellington. Read her obituary here

  • We also remember Joy Jermyn, whose older brother passed away this week, and Linda Simpson, whose husband recently died.

November 15: Annual Market Morning

Only 7 weeks to go! Please keep the Committee in your prayer for fine weather and many visitors.

“We’d love more men to help with the Garage Sale, Yesterday’s Treasures, and Book stalls. A young helper for the barbecue would be great too! For the cake stall, we’re sourcing ‘war-time’ recipes using fewer ingredients – especially butter – to boost our supply” (Viv Peters).

With love and blessings in Christ
