Meeting Nigel Irwin
Meeting Nigel Irwin
Saturday, 25 April 2026, will be noted by the parishioners at St Christopher’s church as another milestone in the history annals of this Anglican Church. People sat in the pews with much anticipation, on a day that Blenheim turned on to show itself at its best, waiting to meet our newly appointed Vicar.
A tall young man with a guitar stood at the front of the church and humbly, yet warmly, unfolded his story of his walk with God, which at times moved him to tears. It was a salutary lesson for us all, with so many facets and takeaways for the intent listener. We learned a lot about our new Vicar-to- be by what he told us, and also by what he didn’t say. There were many wise heads nodding and empathizing, and many felt quite a tug on their hearts, minds, - and spirit.
A surprise came at the end of his testimony with a big announcement. Nigel introduced his Bride-to-Be, which took us completely by surprise, and we were able to meet Laura too, and her two delightful teenagers, and bid them welcome too.
Nigel Irwin is obviously a natural at working with a crowd of unknown people, with a facility to speak to one’s heart, and this gift enabled us to bridge the gap from the unknown - to very much acceptance, of our new leader.
The gathering of over seventy people in the hall for afternoon tea afterwards, was really nice, a very friendly atmosphere prevailed as people intermingled happily with each other, checking on needs, progress, updates, and many made themselves known to Nigel as the opportunity arose. The timing of the long weekend could not have been better, as was the weather, and people went away uplifted. We were also much appreciative of the work of the kitchen team, who worked tirelessly to ensure everything went smoothly and we were all accommodated.
Nigel will be at our two services the next day, to provide our sermon, and it will be another opportunity to get to know him in a more spiritual way.
We now look to the 7th of June, when it all becomes official, and we can go forward to continue work that is a hall mark of this special congregation.
